چکیده

Goto and Gibler (5) r e p o r t e d that nematodes in leaf galls on Calamagrostis canadensis (Michx.) Beauv. near St. Paul, Minnesota, resembled Anguillulina graminophila [= Subanguina graminophila (T. Goodey, 1933) Brzeski, 1981]. Wu (10) descr ibed Anguina calamagrostis Wu, 1967, later renamed Subanguina calamagrostis (Wu, 1967) Brzeski, 1981 (3), as occur r ing on C. canadensis in On ta r io and Quebec , Canada. Calamagrostis canadensis is a c o m m o n grass in low wet prair ies o f the central Uni ted States. Calamagrostis inexpansa A. Gray occurs in similar habitats, bu t is less prevalent . Dur ing 1982-85 , we found S. calamagrostis in C. canadensis galls col lected f rom the Bergman, Crossman, Hayden, Mark Sand, Steele, Stinson, and Williams prair ies in six Iowa counties, and in C. expansa galls f r om Dickenson County, Iowa. C. canadensis galls conta in ing juveni le and adult nematodes were also collected at the Irwin Prair ie just west o f To ledo , l.ucas County , Ohio, and near Por t Wing, Bayfield County, Wisconsin. N o n e o f the locations had ever been cultivated. Fifty galls f rom 1 to 12 mm long (averaging 4.1 mm) and resembl ing the elongated and fur rowed galls described by Goto and Gibler (5) and Wu (10) occu r r ed on abaxial or adaxial leaf surfaces (Fig. 1). Color varied f rom light yellowish-green to tan in young galls to dark b rown in old galls. Pycnidia o f the fungus Dilophospora alopecuri (Fr.) Fr. of ten made old galls appear blackened. New leaf growth of ten occu r red in axils when galls were near nodes. Large galls of ten caused leaves to be twisted and contor ted . Examinat ion o f several galls f rom all Iowa collections indicated that the life cycle was comple ted in J u n e or July when adults, eggs, and juveniles were found in new grass growth. Most adults had det e r io ra ted by mid-August . Young g reen galls found in early Sep t ember were less than 2 mm long and conta ined juveni les but not adults or eggs. Intraspecific variation among clones of a naïve rare grass affects competition with a nonnative, invasive forb

Intraspecific variation can have a major impact on plant community composition yet there is little information available on the extent that such variation by an already established species affects interspecific interactions of an invading species. The current research examined the competitiveness of clones of a globally rare but locally common native grass, Calamagrostis porteri ssp. insperata ...

Mechanisms of resistance to invasion in a California grassland: the roles of competitor identity, resource availability, and environmental gradients

Resistance to the invasion of exotic plants may sometimes result from the strong effects of a relatively small number of resident species. Understanding the mechanisms by which such species resist invasion could provide important insights for the management of invaded ecosystems. Furthermore, the individualistic responses of community members to resource availability and environmental gradients...

Molecular phylogenetics of cool-season grasses in the subtribes Agrostidinae, Anthoxanthinae, Aveninae, Brizinae, Calothecinae, Koeleriinae and Phalaridinae (Poaceae, Pooideae, Poeae, Poeae chloroplast group 1)

Circumscriptions of and relationships among many genera and suprageneric taxa of the diverse grass tribe Poeae remain controversial. In an attempt to clarify these, we conducted phylogenetic analyses of >2400 new DNA sequences from two nuclear ribosomal regions (ITS, including internal transcribed spacers 1 and 2 and the 5.8S gene, and the 3'-end of the external transcribed spacer (ETS)) and fi...

The use of internal nitrogen stores in the rhizomatous grass Calamagrostis epigejos during regrowth after defoliation.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS The regrowth dynamics after defoliation of the invasive grass Calamagrostis epigejos were studied. As nitrogen (N) reserves have been shown to play an important role during plant regrowth, the identity, location and relative importance for regrowth of N stores were determined in this rhizomatous grass. METHODS Plant growth, nitrate uptake and root respiration were followed...

Isolation and Characterization of Soluble Polysaccharides from Calamagrostis Angustifolia Kom

Sequential treatments of dewaxed Calamagrostis angustifolia Kom with water (60 oC and 90 oC), 70% ethanol, and 70% ethanol containing 0.2%, 1.0%, 2.0%, 4.0%, and 8.0% NaOH at a solid to liquid ratio of 1:25 (g/mL) at 80 oC for 3 h yielded 36.2% soluble polysaccharides of the dry dewaxed material. The eight polysaccharide fractions obtained were comparatively studied by sugar analysis, GPC, FT-I...
